The first thing that you need to be an online health coach is desire! To be an entrepreneur you need passion and to be an online entrepreneur you need to be passionate and determined. I am sharing how to become an online health coach but if you have to put in the time and hard work to make it happen.
It is not easy to build something from scratch. The saying “if it was easy, everyone would be doing it” comes to mind…
You need to want it. The idea of working from home, basking in the sun while you sip margarita’s while laying poolside is just a technique that business coaches use to lure you into the idea that being an entrepreneur is this glorious vision that anyone can achieve.
Don’t get me wrong, I daydreamt about the idea and fell victim to it many times while listening to podcasts filling my mind with the concept that if I just believe or manifest; it will come. Reminds me of the movie with the saying “build it and they will come”. When it comes to building a health coaching business online the biggest thing to remember is that it takes time for people to see you online. It takes time for Google to see you as an expert in your niche and it requires a consistent effort of your part, writing content and creating programs that will get people the results that they are looking to achieve.
WHO SHOULD START AN ONLINE BUSINESS AS A HEALTH COACH?
Being an entrepreneur is not for everyone. Working from home or out of a coffee shop comes with pros and cons, just like working for someone else. You want to ask yourself where your current desire is. It is ok to change paths!
Maybe you would like to do both and so you take the appropriate health courses while you work your 9-5. After that, you could work part-time doing both things that bring you joy. There is no right or wrong way to live your life and run your business!
Qualities of A Successful Health Coach
- Passionate, we covered that.
- Being ok failing or maybe it is not ok failing… You WILL fail and you have to believe enough in yourself that you can get up and try again and again until you discover what works for you.
- Ok not having consistent money. This is fairly standard for any entrepreneur, especially in the beginning.
- Enjoy being on a computer. You may be able to hire out many tasks but there are still things that you need to do and they revolve around a computer. It is an online business we are talking about after all…
- Enjoys teaching. That is really what health coaches do. Teach others various skills, techniques, strategies, etc
- Organized, You cannot mess around with paperwork and you will have paperwork to do (even if online) you have to be diligent in getting it done and having it organized. People are sharing personal facts about themselves and those need to be handled accordingly.
- Working with other people. Many people do not like working with others daily and so you want to look at that when starting out and act accordingly. Maybe you don’t run group programs for example.
WHY WOULD SOMEONE BECOME A HEALTH COACH?
The number one reason to become a health coach is to help others. That makes sense but there are other reasons as well. We get lost in the help others to the point that we can lose ourselves. I remember the first time I had someone write to me saying “how dare I charge people for health and say that I want to help people.
Crushed… honestly, I was devastated and thought about it for a long time. Pretty sure that I should quit, that they were right. I was so emotionally torn about it and it took me far too long to remember that I have bills to pay too.
To that point, a reason to become a health coach should be money. In my opinion, it is not a bad thing to make or to want to make money. We spend an awful lot of time worried we don’t have enough or feeling bad about charging it.
You need to eat, pay your mortgage, kid’s activities, bills and so much more so it is ok to put that guilt away. You can set goals and they can be large goals. Maybe, you would like to travel and the reality is that if you live in 2020, you need money.
Another reason to become a health coach would be that you are truly interested in health. That seems redundant, however, loads of people work as hippo crates. I am not talking about you having health issues or working on getting fit. I am talking about running 5-day food challenges while you chow down pizza every night while offline. People will see through it.
One other reason that I feel some do really well as health coaches are personal experience. They have either gone through a health challenge or had a loved one go through a difficult health challenge. This is the number one factor that will drive clients to you. People are curious, they enjoy reading about other people’s journies. Sharing your own struggles can show that you know what they are going through. It shows that you have tried various strategies and perhaps show that some didn’t work and how you came through those trials.
If you have struggled with the various issues that your ideal client is struggling with, who better to serve them and help them through their challenges? I recommend that you begin to practice with your phone recording videos. You can delete them after, but get used to going on video as that is the number one way to really share who you are.
It is easy for a person to book an appointment in the conventional world and take what they are told… so give them a reason to work with you. Provide them with value so that they can start to think about all the options that are really out there for them.
WHAT SCHOOLING DO YOU NEED TO BECOME A HEALTH COACH?
You have a few options. You need to obtain the proper level of Nutritional knowledge. Look for a course that will take around 1 year to complete. The courses that state that you can get a health coaching certificate in 7 days… Certainly are NOT provide you will the level of knowledge or skill that you need to work in this field.
Tip: Most clients interested in hiring a health coach have already done a bit of research on their own, therefore, if you cannot provide more than a quick Google search will then, you will NOT make it in this field.
Nowadays there are many different diets, health concerns, and weight struggles. Focus on being well versed in all of the areas of health. You can have an idea of a niche that you would like to focus on but that could change. You want a diverse program that covers various health issues, diets, supplements, and labs.

You also what to make sure that the school provides support and has solid text material and course curriculum. Another factor to consider is evaluations and testing. It may feel stressful, but you want to have real-life evaluations. Working with clients and submit your findings, recommendations, and protocol to be graded. That way you gain the most real-life experience. You can also ask those individuals to provide a testimony for your website as well!
A biggy is, learn how to teach, seeing as that is what coaches do. Not everyone makes a good teacher. Practice with people that you know or video yourself giving quick 5 min tutorial. Watch it back serval times to see if it makes sense. Show others and ask for feedback and take what they say into consideration.
Having been a College Health Instructor for a decade myself. I found it hard to find a school that could teach me something that I didn’t already know. Not trying to boast, that was simply the issue that I had when researching.

I recommend that you reach out to others and see how they felt about the curriculum. If you look at Facebook groups you can find Health Coach groups. You can ask for feedback.
The school that I went with is called Nutraphoria and I can honestly say that I loved it!
As I said, I already had an in-depth knowledge base and had built many curricula. So, that is a big deal for me to say. I still visit there site to see what they have up and coming as far as courses.
They have a blog post dedicated to what to look for in an online school and I think they hit some nails on the head.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AN ONLINE SCHOOL?
For me flexibility was key. I was teaching full time, had 2 kids, a husband that still wanted to be able to go out from time to time and a house to manage.
The second factor was the curriculum and did the courses, in fact, cover the vast information that I was wanting and at the level that I was seeking. A sales page can be awfully deceiving… I recommend that you call the school and chat about specific questions.
Is the program accredited? Basically, this means that they have to maintain and reach certain guidelines.
Next, I look at the cost and truthfully although this is important, it should not be your deciding factor. Rather, you want to look at the value that the course gives you. The more you learn, the more that you will be able to help your ideal client. The school will pay itself off eventually.
TECH NEEDED TO BECOME A HEALTH COACH
I suggest that you start your website while you are taking your courses. You can be honest with your audience, share that this is part of your journey. Write one post a week on what you are currently learning. This will help your study while sharing valuable content.
I cover all of this in detail in my course.
The name of my course is The Health Coach Creator. It provides you with everything that you need, whether you are in school or just finished. I even have a section on SEO and analytics for the experienced coach that isn’t where they want to be yet.

The course helps you further narrow down your niche and ideal client. If you don’t know who you are speaking to, how can they find you?
Next, I cover how to set up a domain, host and then creating your WordPress site so that you can get set up quickly and save money having to pay someone else to do it. You want your site up as soon as you can to build your domain authority. That is really a thing, I had no idea until a couple of years in business. I had not set my site up to even rank with Google and so no one was even finding it in a search… ouch…
I think it is so important to know your own business and so I think building it yourself is critical. Do not let anyone tell you that you can’t… It is not hard, it takes steps and a couple of days and that is it… I walk you through the whole thing HERE.
It can feel so overwhelming in the beginning… Honesty, it can feel overwhelming in the middle too and that is ok. It is also ok to ask for help. You can hire out or take a course to help guide you and save you some time. There is no absolute way to work in this business and don’t be fooled by guru syndrome. Just because it works for someone else doesn’t mean it will work for you and trial and error are just apart of building a business!
You got this!
I would love to hear from you and where you are at. Feel free to leave a comment and I will definitely get back to you! Is there a specific program that you completed and would recommend?
